Mr. & Mrs. Karl A. Staley House

Madison, Lake County, OH

National Register and Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy

National Register nomination (NR# SG100009151) project for the owner-built Usonian house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture.  The In-Line plan residential building comprises quarry-faced square “Mill Creek” river stone and tidewater red cypress wood.  The Lake County house is located on 4.3 acres along the shore of Lake Erie. Karl and Roberta Staley constructed the house between 1951 and 1954.

Mayor Jack and (the late) Susan Turben, second owners of the house, worked with the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy to establish a Historic Preservation Easement for the property.  The property includes the Usonian house, a 1950 Adirondack Garden House, a Boat House, and a stone bridge completed in 1955.  The house has since been donated to the University School to serve as stewards for the house and as a foundation for the school’s architectural program.  The architectural plans were donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society.
