Butternut Ridge Historic District
North Olmsted, OH
Preservation services to create Design Guidelines for the Butternut Ridge Historic District which represents the settlement and development of the Western Reserve and North Olmsted as it transitioned from an early nineteenth century rural community into a twentieth century suburban city.
The Design Guidelines identify historic architectural building styles which span from the early nineteenth century settlement years of Olmsted Township with the 1825 Greek Revival style house at 27040 Butternut Ridge Road through the gradual growth following the railroad and interurban into the twentieth century and post-World War II affordable suburban housing growth exhibited through the Ranches and Split-Levels of the 1960s. The Design Guidelines identify and define design standards to serve as a tool for education and further understanding of local Historic Preservation Ordinances, and to create consistency in the design review process conducted by the North Olmsted Landmark Commission. The project included working with City Planning and the Landmark Commission; public meetings provided community input and participation.
